The Power of Your Mind

If you think of any invention, innovation, object, or entity that mankind has created, the very first starting point of said creation is an idea. Everything that has very been created is born as an idea in someone's head. In many cases, ideas die off from a lack of belief or faith in the idea. To get what one desires, it is required for one to truly believe that it will happen. Throughout my time at South Carolina, I’ve seen multiple projects be born from absolutely nothing. I’ve grown tremendously in personal and professional ways because of the belief and faith I have in myself and my skills. All it takes for an idea to become reality is pure belief and faith in the idea.

My learning about the power of the mind started long ago as I have always tried to grow and learn more through reading. My beliefs about having a successful mindset were reinforced as I took Psychology 101: Introduction to Psychology. Ironically, this was a class I was required to take to graduate; however, I certainly enjoyed it and learned a lot about the mind and what it is capable of enabling you to do. One of the biggest takeaways from PSYC 101 was the power the subconscious mind has over your body. Your subconscious makes up roughly 95% of your brain power and it is responsible for everything your body does to survive, as shown in WTC artifact #3. What is also important to know about the subconscious mind is that it absorbs so much information every day, an unfathomable amount and much of it never reaches the subconscious mind. The subconscious serves as a database that has recorded every breathing second you have spent alive. This newfound learning has changed how I navigate my life in two ways: awareness and potential.

With self-awareness, I am tuned into my surroundings, attitude, and thoughts. Am I surrounding myself in the right environment with the right people who care for me? Am I feeding my brain negativity without realizing it? I am focusing on the positives in life, and what the good outcomes could be, or rather am I am just thinking about what could go wrong? This all affects our subconscious and quality of life. I also realized that because the subconscious is a bank of information, emotions, values, and beliefs; and if trained properly and unlocked, there is absolutely nothing I am incapable of. There is this drive and power within us all that can push us to do anything, but it first takes a belief that it is all possible. Writing, reflection, and deep visualization are ways I began to understand the power of the mind. Through this understanding, I was able to take on personal challenges fearlessly and grow in ways I never would have thought possible.

One personal challenge that allowed me to tap into the power of the mind was serving as the fraternity treasurer during my fraternity’s housing fundraiser event. Being a fairly new chapter at USC, my fraternity was not fortunate enough to have a chapter house in the Fraternity and Sorority Life’s Greek Village. A chapter house is something very important to any Greek life organization, especially with our growing size having over 175 brothers. For social functions, brotherhood events, alumni weekends, sorority mixers, etc, this house would be utilized in many ways. In its original organizational role, the Housing chairman was designed to manage our fraternity’s satellite houses around campus. Until my brother and good friend of mine, Rich, had bigger ideas while serving in this role. Rich had a set goal of building an off-campus fraternity chapter house within the next 2-3 years. Starting from $0, Rich created an organized fundraising plan and brought his energy to the entire chapter. After only a year, our chapter raised over $100,000 for a house and made major strides in beginning construction, as shown in BTC Artifact #3. Being chapter treasurer during this time allowed me to have a larger role in this project and eventually made me next in line to serve as our housing chairman. I further developed my communication skills by having to rely on information from our entire chapter our alumni association and Theta Chi nationals. More importantly, I also learned the power of the mind through visualization and having faith in a project. I was required to transmit this energy and showcase this vision to our entire chapter of brothers to rally for our cause.

Nothing in life is out of your reach. I learned this throughout my understanding of the subconscious mind, choosing to have faith, and deeply visualizing my desires. The power to achieve anything is within us all if you have true faith. I will use this mindset to further grow not just in the professional world but in all aspects of my life. In my future career, I will be able to achieve any feat through the power of the mind. Whether it is landing a big client, a new project with a team, or eventually starting a new business, there is nothing that is impossible unless you believe it is.
